Letter Sounds

Many teachers use the teaching of letter sounds to enhance their beginning reading instruction. Phonics is each individual sound that the letters of the alphabet make. These sounds of the alphabet are taught to young children to help them make the connection with the actual letter, as in what it looks like, to what each letter sounds like. In preparing children for reading, many teachers begin with teaching phonics in order to allow the children to become familiar with the letters that indeed make up words. There are many ways educators teach this vital concept; through reading books to the classroom or small groups of children, using picture cards that match the beginning sound of each letter, and with computer games that say the sound of each letter. Teachers also organize and facilitate classroom group activities on alphabet and sound recognition, help the children complete worksheets, coloring sheets, and more. There is a multitude of effective ways to introduce the sounds of the letters to the young students, and the majority of these was are fun and engaging!

Poem 3 : A Valentine for Mom

I bought a box of chocolates
for my mother's valentine;
a giant, heart-shaped package
with a flowery design.

They had them at the market
and got the biggest one.
I nearly couldn't pick it up.
It must have weighed a ton.

I had to use a shopping cart
to haul it from the store.
At home I almost couldn't
even fit it through the door.

I gave it to my mother
and you should have seen her eyes!
I clearly had impressed her
with my chocolate box's size.

That carton was gargantuan --
the largest I could find --
but not because I'm generous
and not because I'm kind.

I didn't buy the biggest one
to show how much I care.
I bought it just to guarantee
my mom would have to share.

Poem 2 : A Sheep is Asleep On My Sofa

A sheep is asleep on my sofa.
A sheep is asleep on my floor.
A sheep is asleep in the closet,
and seems to be starting to snore.

A sheep is asleep on my dresser.
A sheep is asleep on my bed.
I found when I woke up this morning,
a sheep was asleep on my head.

A few can be found in the corner.
They're soundly asleep in a heap.
There isn't a space in my bedroom
that isn't all covered in sheep.

With so many sheep in my bedroom,
I'm thinking I wasn't too bright,
and maybe I shouldn't have asked for
a sheepover party last night.

Poem 1 : My Sister Says She's Sleepy

My sister says she's sleepy,
that her energy is sapped.
She says she'd feel much better
if she climbed in bed and napped.

She says she she feels so drowsy,
that she has to shut her eyes.
She just can't keep from closing them
no matter how she tries.

She's claims she's so exhausted
that she cannot stay awake.
She swears that she'll be useless
till she has a little break.

She says she needs to catch some Z's,
to hit the hay, to doze,
to hibernate, to dream,
to have a moment of repose.

I'm pretty sure she's faking
when she jumps in bed and snores.
This happens every time our mother
says to do her chores.

Story 1 : The Lion and The Mouse

Once when a Lion was asleep, a little Mouse began running up and down upon him. This soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him and opened his big jaws to swallow him.

"Pardon, O King!" cried the little Mouse, "Forgive me this time. I shall never repeat it and I shall never forget your kindness. And who knows, but I may be able to do you a good turn one of these days?"

The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go.

Sometime later a few hunters captured the King and tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him on.

Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, ran up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said the little Mouse, very happy to help the Lion.
